Experimental diagenesis using present-day submarine turbidite sands

Hydrothermal-reactor experiments were conducted to investigate the potential formation of chlorite and microquartz grain coatings on detrital quartz feldspar grains, understand their role in inhibiting (albite) overgrowths. Modern-day proximal distal unconsolidated sediment from Bute Inlet (British Columbia, Canada) with known amounts precursor clay content, used as starting material. The samples heated 250°C at water vapour pressure a hydrothermal reactor for 72 h. performed without silica supersaturated Na 2 CO 3 (0.1 M) solution. Detailed microscopy EDS mapping analysis identified that main precursor, crucial synthesized coatings, was Mg-rich chlorite. experimental results showed where volume low (i.e., 0.1%), notably channel samples, poorly developed, maximum chlorite-coating coverage 0.5% 47%, respectively. In contrast, an initial 14.5%, lobe sample has generated ranging 42.9% 56.3% post-experiment, 77%. formed study are morphologically similar those seen natural sandstone reservoirs, they have restricted development albite cementation experiments. findings provide quantitative data can be utilised describe diagenetic changes mesodiagenetic environments.
